Car Boot Sale
A “car boot sale” in Western culture can be compared to a Chinese village market, where the villagers gather with their old belongings and sell them to each other. Last Saturday, the International School of Beijing held its own car boot sale, which many students and parents participated in. The sellers sold unwanted items in good condition, such as unused home appliances, old books and toys, clothes, and furniture, etc. The sellers brought the items to school and then displayed them in their opened car trunks for sale. Since only typical household items were sold, everything was very cheap. The low prices attracted many workers and villagers from outside the school as well as students and school staff to make purchases.
My classmate and I decided to use the opportunity of the car boot sale to raise funds for the Children’s House of Rural Woman Along with our neighbors, families, and friends, we collected belongings that we could sell. We managed to sell everything that we brought to the car boot sale, and raised a total of RMB 2000. These funds will go towards the Children’s House of Rural Woman
I feel like the car boot sale was extremely meaningful. Apart from raising funds for the Children’s House, buyers could get what they wanted at low cost. Those families who donated unused items to us could recycle their useful but unwanted items that might have been thrown away. Also the ISB Car Boot Sales itself was a fund raising event for medical support to poor and orphaned children in China. This was certainly a memorable experience with great satisfaction.
